About the Presenter
Jennifer Karpuk, B.A.Sc., P.Eng.
Canada Masonry Design Centre – Vancouver
Jennifer Karpuk Jennifer earned her B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus) in 2020 and brings five years of experience as a Structural Engineer at Fast + Epp. Her background spans the full project lifecycle, including design, construction-phase project management, site reviews, and multidisciplinary coordination. She has worked with local seismic conditions, as well as retrofit and rehabilitation projects across a range of materials.
Jennifer joined CMDC in late 2025 and is based in the Vancouver office to provide local support to both designers and contractors.
About the Topic
Masonry Veneers in High-Rain Climates: Detailing for Water Management, Movement, and Durability
This presentation will introduce key factors masonry veneers from materials to rainscreen principles and common concerns. The primary focus will be on the detailing considerations designer can add to their toolkit to aid in preventing moisture ingress as well as discussion of best practices from industry and code requirements for detailing of element such as movement joint, shelf angles and more.
Learning objectives:
1 – Attendees will understand the difference between a different types of masonry veneers (Masonry Veneers, Unit Masonry Veneers, Rainscreens, and Adhered Veneers)
2 – Attendee will gain an understanding of the purpose of movement joints and shelf angles as well as their placement
3 – Those in Attendance will learn about possible sources moisture ingress and the level of redundancy well detail masonry veneers offer.
