About the Topic:  Curtain Wall Failures & Methods of Retrofit

Curtain wall failures are a common and often highly visible problem for commercial owners and managers. This presentation focuses on ways in which a curtain wall can fail, including air and water penetration, structural failures, and aesthetic degradation. From design and installation, to components reaching their design life-cycle, curtain walls fail for a variety of reasons. Practical examples are used to show these root causes, what could have been done to prevent them, and illustrate proper methods of detailing.

Once the decision to retrofit has been made, there are many factors that determine the best methods to use. Case studies highlight the main approaches, including refurbishment of the existing system, overcladding, and full removal and replacement. Case studies include retrofits at The Zurich Building (400 University Avenue, Toronto), City Centre Place and Oxford Tower (Edmonton), and Toronto City Hall.

This information is invaluable for anyone preparing a specification, reviewing shop drawings, dealing with suppliers and installers, and conducting or coordinating site audits and inspections.
