About the Presenter: Ray McGowan, National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC)
Mr. McGowan manages the commercial fenestration energy rating program at NFRC, the Component Modeling Approach . Mr. McGowan works with many fenestration trade organizations such as ANSI, the National Institute of Building Science, ASHRAE as a voting member of ASHRAE SSPC 90.1/Envelope SC and ASHRAE Fenestration Technical Committee (TC 4.5) – Vice-Chair and TC 4.2 Research SC chair. Mr. McGowan previously consulted for the ENERGY STAR ® program, marketed commercial HVAC equipment, and tested and designed power equipment for the US Navy and electrical utilities. He has a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA degree in Finance.
About the Topic:
The BC Energy Efficiency Act and the BC Building Code energy standards (ASHRAE 90.1, 2011 NECB) include options for glazing assemblies to meet an overall, effective U-value for the entire building, allowing for trade-offs between individual glazing components. They reference NFRC test standards (e.g., NFRC 100). The NFRC Component Modeling Approach (CMA) and software tool (CMAST) could be used to support this once local suppliers have input their glazing assembly components online.
Mr. McGowan will provide an overview of the NFRC, how NFRC ratings work, residential and commercial rating details, and how NFRC is referenced in ASHRAE 90.1 and the National Energy Code for Buildings (2011).
