SUMMARY:Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) present Sustainability in the Fast-Tracked Era of Major Projects
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Engineers and Geoscientists BC\, in collaboration with our Climate Change and Sustainability Advisory Group\, hosts a Sustainability Panel event that is focused on integrating sustainability into professional practice. At this event\, we bring together panelists who can focus on some of the initiatives being led across BC and share with us their approaches to creating a sustainable future. The theme for 2026 is: \nSustainability in the Fast-Tracked Era of Major Projects\nRecently\, federal and provincial governments have shifted toward streamlined approval and permitting processes for major projects designated as strategic or in the national interest. These reforms raise questions about how regulatory efficiency\, social and environmental outcomes\, and professional due diligence can be balanced in practice. During this event\, a diverse group of panelist will share their insights into: \n• How evolving government priorities affect environmental assessments\, Indigenous engagement and risk management responsibilities for professionals involved in major projects \n• Ways professionals can navigate uncertainty\, professional accountability and sustainability considerations within evolving federal/provincial frameworks \n• What “streamlining” means in practical terms for project design\, permitting and decision-making\nHow major projects can respect Indigenous titles and rights\, support meaningful partnerships and advance reconciliation through collaboration and shared decision-making \n• The panelists will share their approaches with some examples of how incorporating sustainability into major projects looks like in practice\, from an Indigenous perspective\, a consultant perspective and a regulator perspective. Join us for an insightful discussion! \nThe panel portion will be recorded and a livestream option is available. \nSchedule\n• 6:00 to 6:30 PM: Registration\n• 6:30 to 8:00 PM: Panel discussion\n• 8:00 to 9:00 PM: Networking\nSimple refreshments will be available during the networking. \nPanelists\nSteve DeRoy \nSteve DeRoy is the Co-Founder\, Chief Executive Officer (CEO)\, and Director of Firelight. SUMMARY:Vancouver Luncheon Seminar: Integral Concrete Waterproofing Systems: Best Practices for Durable Below-Grade Structures
DESCRIPTION:Agenda\n11:45 – 12:00   Registration & Housekeeping\n12:00 – 12:30   Lunch\n12:30 –    1:30   Presentation and Q&A\n   1:30 –    2:00   Networking (optional) \nAbout the Presenter\n \nKevin Lin\nKryton International \nKevin Lin works with engineers\, building envelope consultants\, contractors\, and ready-mix producers throughout British Columbia to improve the durability and watertightness of concrete structures. His work focuses on integral waterproofing systems\, concrete durability strategies\, and long-term performance of below-grade assemblies. \nKevin began his career in the building envelope sector with Cascade Aqua-Tech Ltd.\, where he supported consultants and contractors with waterproofing\, air barrier\, and building enclosure systems. This experience provided him with a strong foundation in building envelope design\, detailing\, and construction coordination. \nToday at Kryton International\, Kevin works with design teams across the Lower Mainland to help integrate concrete durability and waterproofing strategies into structural assemblies. \nBefore entering the construction industry\, Kevin was a classically trained symphony musician who performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and earned a Master of Music from Carnegie Mellon University. His background in orchestral performance shaped his appreciation for complex systems — where precision\, coordination\, and attention to detail determine long-term success. \nAbout the Topic\nIntegral Concrete Waterproofing Systems: Best Practices for Durable Below-Grade Structures\nCrystalline concrete admixtures have been used in concrete waterproofing since the mid-1980s. Over time\, the category has expanded from a small number of manufacturers to a wide range of products\, often grouped together under the general term “crystalline admixtures.” However\, these products rely on different chemistries and mechanisms\, and their performance characteristics can vary significantly. \nThis presentation reviews current best practices for specifying and implementing permeability-reducing admixtures for waterproofing applications. The session begins with an overview of American Concrete Institute (ACI) Chapter 15 guidance on permeability-reducing admixtures\, which provides a framework for selecting admixtures based on performance requirements and exposure conditions.\n \nThe presentation also reviews independent testing conducted by the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) evaluating permeability reduction\, shrinkage crack mitigation\, and self-sealing behavior in accordance with ACI recommendations. \nThe session concludes with practical guidance on incorporating crystalline admixtures into a complete integral waterproofing system\, including detailing for construction joints\, pipe penetrations\, control joints\, and repair of defective concrete. The goal is to help design teams understand how integral waterproofing systems can be detailed and coordinated across stakeholders to improve long-term watertightness and durability. \nLearning Objectives\nAfter attending this presentation\, participants will be able to:\n1. Understand ACI guidance related to permeability-reducing chemical admixtures (PRAs) and how these classifications apply to waterproofing design.\n2. Differentiate performance characteristics between various types of crystalline and permeability-reducing admixtures used in concrete waterproofing.\n3. Interpret independent test results related to permeability reduction\, crack mitigation\, and self-sealing capabilities.\n4. Apply best practices for detailing integral waterproofing systems\, including joints\, penetrations\, and repair strategies.\n5. Recognize coordination requirements between designers\, contractors\, and concrete suppliers when implementing integral waterproofing systems. \nREGISTRATION\nPlease Note:\nAll WALK-UPS (non pre-registered attendees) must pay a blanket price of $65.00\, including Students and Members. \nRefunds:\nNo Refunds after Wednesday\, June 17th Noon. Refunds will be offered before June 17th less $25 admin charge. \nEducation Credits:\nThis luncheon seminar qualifies for 1.0 AIBC Core Learning Unit. To receive credit\, enter a valid AIBC Registration Number during the online registration process. \nTo register for this event\, click on the following link: Vancouver Luncheon Seminar Monday June 22\, 2026 \n \n
