SUMMARY:Vancouver Luncheon: Hazardous Materials in Buildings
DESCRIPTION:About the Presenter:\nRemi Charron\, Ph.D.\, P.Eng\, Assistant Chair & Associate Professor\nM.S. in Energy Management\, NYIT-Vancouver \nRemi Charron obtained his Ph.D. in Building Engineering from Concordia in 2007\, where his research focused on developing an optimisation tool for the early stage design of net-zero energy solar homes. He worked for three years as a senior researcher in sustainable housing at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)\, with many projects focused on their EQuilibrium Sustainable Housing demonstration initiative. He has been a member of various committees and teams including the R-2000 and Energy Star for Houses renewal committees\, the Canadian Centre for Housing Technologies Research Committee and the Sustainable Housing Technology Roadmap team. A certified Passive House Designer\, Remi has been offering consulting services in housing research and education for 5 years. He joined NYIT-Vancouver in September 2016 as the Assistant Chair and Associate professor for the Master of Science in Energy Management. \nAbout the Topic: Building Envelope for Smart Buildings \nSmart homes and buildings are on the rise. Their transition from a future concept to reality is accelerating with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). As for the IoT\, its rise is being driven by three areas: the cloud which enables data storage\, processing and remote access; evolving and proliferating smart devices (e.g. phones\, watches and tablets) that provide a good user interface platform; and finally the development of inexpensive sensors with wireless capability. This presentation will examine how smart buildings and IoT technologies can impact the building envelope. Simple concepts such as integrating sensors to assist with fault detection\, to more advanced concepts of integrating smart building envelope components (e.g. electrochromic windows\, controllable vents\, etc.) to allow for the dynamic operation of the building envelope as a part of an energy management control system will be examined.
