DESCRIPTION:About the Presenter: \nJohn G. Cooke\, P.Eng.\, FCSC\, RSW\, CAHP\, Principal John G. Cooke & Associates Ltd. \nJohn Cooke graduated from University College Galway\, Ireland with a Civil Engineering Degree in 1977. After working as an Engineer in Ireland he relocated to work in Canada\, first in Calgary Alberta\, and then in Ottawa where he currently resides. In 1992 John G. Cooke & Associates was formed. John’s particular field of expertise is in heritage and masonry conservation\, where he is distinguished by numerous awards and honorary appointments including the presidency of Construction Specifications Canada in 2006/2007 and was conferred with a Fellowship in 2008. With almost 40 years of experience\, John has worked on many notable buildings including the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa\, Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City\, The Empress Hotel in Victoria\, Hotel Vancouver\, and is presently serving as a Structural Project Manager on the West Block Rehabilitation on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. \nAbout the topic: \nThe presentation will cover an overview of topics concerning the restoration of historic masonry structures. It will include understanding masonry buildings\, repairing inappropriate interventions and damaged heritage materials\, recognizing that short-term savings can lead to long-term costs\, and performing seismic upgrades to unreinforced masonry structures. It will also discuss modern building materials used in historic structures and achieving compatibility between materials by specifying appropriate replacement masonry units (stone and brick) and mortar composition (lime mortars vs cement mortars) as well as\, repointing techniques and methods of repairing existing stones.
