SUMMARY:Victoria Luncheon: Building Science at UVic: Energy-Efficient & Sustainable Built Environment
DESCRIPTION:About the Presenter: Phalguni Mukhopadhyaya\, PhD\, P.Eng – University of Victoria \nPhalguni Mukhopadhyaya\, PhD\, P.Eng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Civil Engineering Program) at the University of Victoria\, British Columbia\, Canada. His research interests are in energy and moisture performance of building materials and envelope systems. Presently he is working on next generation thermal insulation materials (VIP\, Aerogel\, Bio-foam etc.) and systems\, and their integration in the built environment construction. Phalguni has authored/co-authored about 150 technical publications and reports\, co-edited two ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) STPs (Special Technical Publications) 1495 & 1519 and edited one conference proceedings (see http://www.ivis2011.org). At present he is the Technical Co-Chair of the upcoming\, October 2016\, ASTM International Symposium on Advances in Hygrothermal Performance of Building Envelopes: Materials\, Systems and Stimulations\, and elected member of the ASTM C16 Executive committee C16 on Thermal Insulation.   \nAbout the topic: Building Science at UVic: Energy-Efficient & Sustainable Built Environment \nBuildings consume more than 40% (60% in urban areas) of our national energy demand. Increasing energy efficiency in every aspect of our daily lives is considered to be the key to mitigating the causes of global warming and climate change. Responding to this scenario\, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Victoria (UVic) has started an initiative to advance teaching and research capabilities that will help to develop and adopt next generation energy-efficient and sustainable materials\, systems & technologies in built environment construction. This presentation will start with highlighting the issues related to design and development of energy-efficient and sustainable building envelope systems\, and the required infrastructures for research and training on next-generation building envelope technologies. In addition\, this presentation will also introduce the importance and challenges of high performance thermal insulations in both new & retrofitted building envelope constructions.
