SUMMARY:Vancouver Luncheon: Shou Sugi Ban – Exploring the Characteristics and Aesthetics of Charred Wood as a Cladding Material
DESCRIPTION:About the Presenters: \nJason Hirnschall\, Dipl.Tech\, LEED Green Associate\, Morrison Hershfield\n\nJason Hirnschall is a building envelope consultant at Morrison Hershfield. He has experience with design and field review for most aspects of the building envelope including roof and wall assemblies\, glazing systems\, and below-grade waterproofing. He has been involved with residential and commercial construction of both wood-frame and concrete buildings. Jason is a graduate of BCIT’s Architectural and Building Technology program and the recipient of the BCBEC Education Foundation Achievement Award in Building Science. \nMichael Aw\, Dipl. T.\, BC Building Science Ltd. \nMichael Aw is a recent graduate (2016) from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) where he achieved his diploma in Architectural Building Technology\, specializing in the field of building science. Michael has a strong working knowledge of building science theory and application and recently has joined the team of professional engineers and technologists at BC Building Science Ltd. (BCBS) in 2016. Michael now works as a Project Consultant on a variety of new construction and renovation projects\, which include low and high rise buildings throughout the lower mainland. Some examples of the various scopes of service Michael provides include: conducting assessments and reviews\, performing various tests of building enclosure assemblies\, conducting site reviews and writing reports. In this role\, Michael is a critical part of BCBS’s team in aiding the construction industry in designing and construction more durable\, energy efficient\, building envelope systems and assemblies. \nPreston Wu\, Building Science Technologist at RDH Building Science Inc. \nPreston Wu is a Building Science Technologist on the Repair\, Renewal\, and Rehabilitation team at RDH Building Science Inc. His work includes investigations\, testing of building enclosure assemblies\, condition assessments\, and developing appropriate solutions for existing buildings. In the field\, Preston conducts reviews to ensure that construction is undertaken in conformance with contract documents. Since joining RDH in 2016\, he has had the opportunity to work on a variety of buildings and complexes\, from residential to commercial\, high-rise to low-rise\, and combustible and non-combustible. Preston graduated from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with an Architectural Building Technology Diploma and has a strong knowledge of building science theory and application. He won first place in the 2016 Capstone Competition hosted by BCBEC for his project on Shou Sugi Ban Charred Wood Siding in Coastal BC. \nAbout the Topic: \nShou Sugi Ban – Exploring the Characteristics and Aesthetics of Charred Wood as a Cladding Material \nThe technique of fire treating wood cladding is receiving growing attention as a means of adding a unique visual design to a building fa ç ade. Originating in ancient Japan\, Shou Sugi Ban has been used for centuries as a means of protecting wood siding from insects\, rot\, and fire. Today\, it is being used as a high-end designer product. \nWhile attending BCIT’s Architectural and Building Technology program\, Jason\, Michael\, and Preston investigated the weatherability of charred wood siding to better understand its performance in a coastal climate.  Accelerated weather testing was performed using different combinations of char depth\, wood species and finish treatments. With collaboration from FP Innovations\, RDH Building Science\, and Intertek their capstone research project was awarded first place by BCBEC in 2016. \nThis presentation is intended to be a high-level overview on the use of Shou Sugi Ban\, the outcome of their research\, and the benefits and drawbacks of this alluring product. \nSeminar Presentation: \n\n\n\nShou Sugi Ban – Exploring the Characteristics and Aesthetics of Charred Wood as a Cladding Material\nJason Hirnschall\nMorrison HershfieldMichael Aw\nBC Building Science Ltd. \nPreston Wu\nRDH Building Science Inc. \n\nJan 2017\n\n\n\n\n
